Choosing a business loan consultant starts with a practical question: what help do you need that you cannot get directly from the bank or a free official service? Write that down before comparing proposals. Then check who will do the work, what it costs and what happens if the application does not proceed.
MyKNP is a BNM, CGC and AKPK initiative. The SME route is MyKNP at CGC; the AKPK route within MyKNP is for unsuccessful home-financing applicants. BNM identifies unsuccessful SME applicants as the audience for CGC's free service. BNM, checked 17 October 2026
It helps explain rejection factors, steps towards a future application and possible alternative financing. Start with the bank's explanation, then use BNM's MyKNP page, checked 17 October 2026 to reach the appropriate service. Help with preparation does not promise a different credit decision.
AKPK's business support covers SMEs, including micro SMEs, needing financial-management advice or help with repayment difficulties. BNM and AKPK describe support for working out repayment arrangements with banks, including cases involving several banks. This is a different service from MyKNP's housing route. BNM/AKPK joint statement, checked 17 October 2026
BNM's scam-education guide directs readers to AKPK for free counselling and debt-management advice. BNM, checked 17 October 2026 For the appropriate contact route, use the AKPK entry on BNM's SME support page, checked 17 October 2026. Ask AKPK which service fits your business and whether it meets the conditions for any formal debt programme. Seeking advice is not confirmation of programme eligibility. Do not pay a middleman simply to approach AKPK.
Ask for a proposal that names the work: reviewing the available records, listing gaps, organising an application file and helping you understand the bank's requests. These are suggested deliverables to negotiate, not a promise that every consultant provides them.
Keep the roles clear. The consultant you hire for preparation is not the lender in that application. BNM explains that lenders conduct credit assessments; paying for preparation cannot promise approval. BNM, checked 17 October 2026 Ask who will submit the application and keep a copy of anything submitted in your name.
Use this table to read a proposed contract. It explains possible fee labels, not standard Malaysian market prices, a regulator's approved tariff or EGA's fee model.
| Model | Meaning to clarify in the proposal | Ask before agreeing |
|---|---|---|
| Retainer | Payment for an agreed period of work or ongoing support. | What work and time are covered? When does it renew, and how do I stop it? |
| Success fee | Payment tied to a defined event. | Does “success” mean an offer, acceptance or actual disbursement? What if I reject the terms? |
| Fixed advisory fee | An agreed amount for named work. | What outputs are included? What costs extra, and what is payable if the application stops? |
| Upfront “processing” or “release” payment | A demand to pay first so a promised loan can be released. Treat this as a warning sign. | Stop and verify the demand directly with the named lender through its official channel. |
BNM's bogus-loan warning describes requests for tax or insurance payments alongside instant-approval claims. BSN explicitly flags upfront processing payments. BNM, checked 17 October 2026 BSN, checked 17 October 2026 A written advisory scope and a demand to unlock promised loan proceeds are different things. Do not judge legitimacy from the fee's name alone; verify the work, payee and payment trigger.
These terms should not be used interchangeably.
| Description | Role to understand | Official check |
|---|---|---|
| Business financing consultant | In this guide, a provider hired for application preparation and support. Ask for a written scope and registered business identity. The label alone does not establish a bank appointment or regulatory approval. | Check business identity with SSM e-Search, checked 17 October 2026. For a claimed bank appointment, ask that bank directly. |
| Licensed financial adviser | Often used in searches, but BNM calls the category approved financial advisers. Its financial-advisory framework includes insurance/takaful advice and is distinct from preparing a business loan file. | Check the exact entity against BNM's approved financial advisers list, checked 17 October 2026. See BNM's regulatory explanation and financial-advisory FAQ, both checked 17 October 2026. |
| Licensed moneylender / Kredit Komuniti | A provider of lending, rather than a consultant preparing a bank application. | Use KPKT's official i-KrediKom page, checked 17 October 2026 to access the search for licensed Kredit Komuniti companies in Peninsular Malaysia. |
Use the check that matches the claim. A business-registration match should not replace checking a claimed financial authorisation against the relevant official list.
